Speaker Guidelines

Global Peace & Unity Festival
Speaker Guidelines

Introduction

As we prepare for our upcoming event, we recognise the importance of fostering an environment of open dialogue, mutual respect, promoting justice and freedom, and legal compliance. This guide aims to help you navigate discussions related to Palestine, Lebanon, and Israel. Our goal is to ensure you are able to express your views in a way that promotes justice and liberation, and in a legally compliant and secure way for all participants.

We do not dictate the content of our speakers’ speeches, nor do we ask our speakers to give us a written copy of their speech. However, we want to remind all to stay within the boundaries of the law.

Legal Considerations and General Guidelines

It is crucial to understand the legal framework within which we operate. Laws regarding hate speech, incitement, and defamation prohibit language that promotes violence, discrimination, or hatred against individuals or groups based on their nationality, ethnicity, or religion.

Please be reminded that under English law, promoting or endorsing proscribed organisations is illegal and can result in prosecution, both for the speaker and the organisers.

While we encourage open discourse, and the purpose of the GPU Festival is to promote, justice as a path towards peace and unity amongst diverse communities in the UK and internationally, please be mindful of these legal boundaries. If you’re unsure about specific content, err on the side of caution or consult our on-site legal advisor.

We ask all speakers to approach their presentations with a commitment to factual accuracy and respect. When discussing historical events or current affairs, rely on reputable sources. Clearly distinguish between established facts and personal opinions or interpretations.

Handling Q&A Sessions

We trust your judgement and expertise to handle sensitive conversations or questions that may arise from audience members, especially during the seminar sessions. If faced with challenging questions or comments:

  • Remain calm and professional
  • Redirect and contextualise loaded questions to broader issues and their historical context

Conclusion

Your role as a speaker is crucial in fostering an environment of intellectual exchange, promoting justice, and mutual understanding. By adhering to these guidelines, you contribute to a conference that respects diverse viewpoints while maintaining a safe and legally compliant space for all.

We appreciate your cooperation and look forward to your valuable contribution to our event.
